Pregnancy Massage can be very therapeutic but also soothing and relaxing experience. It addresses the needs of pregnant woman while her body is going through a period of some most dramatic physiologic changes.
A growing baby changes the body’s centre of gravity which can put a lot of strain on the future mum’s lower back, sacroiliac joint area, neck and shoulders as well as abdomen. Additionally hormonal changes during pregnancy can have significant effect on ligaments and joints stability.
Relaxin softens connective tissue and increases ligaments laxity allowing adaptation to a growing baby and preparation for birth. However those changes also increase susceptibility to injuries and can often cause pain or discomfort in joints, most commonly sacroiliac joint and pubis symphysis.
Progesterone relaxes smooth muscles in the digestive tract and uterus to prevent excessive contractions, in vascular walls to maintain low blood pressure but also in veins and lymphatic system. That all can lead to sluggish circulation, digestive problems, swelling of the legs and blocked sinuses. Massage can be found highly beneficial in relaxing tight areas, easing the discomfort around joints but also supporting lymph flow decreasing swelling, reducing fatigue and anxiety, improving digestion and promoting relaxation.
Pregnancy massage is generally safe in all trimesters and strength of the treatment is adjusted to what you and your body needs. However if your pregnancy is at higher risk or you are suffering from a medical condition I would like you to ask your doctor for a letter admitting it is safe for you to have a massage treatment.
Being a mum of a little boy I still remember so well all the emotions and how the body feels while it’s going through all the pregnancy changes. I’m always very excited to meet with other mums and ‘mums to be’ and share my experience and knowledge in both physical therapy as well as natural/nutritional approaches to pregnancy, post-natal support and general health.
